Is a galvanized steel pipe a lead risk?

Short answer

Galvanized pipes can absorb lead from an upstream lead line and release it later. Under EPA's rules, galvanized lines that are or were downstream of lead are called 'galvanized requiring replacement' and are replaced along with lead lines. Ask your utility how your line is classified.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my water pipe is lead?

Find where the water line enters your home, usually near the meter. Lightly scratch it with a coin or key. Lead is soft, dull gray, scratches to shiny silver, and a magnet will not stick. Galvanized steel attracts a magnet. Copper scratches to a penny color. Confirm with your utility.
