How long does lead service line replacement take?

Short answer

The digging itself is short: NYC DEP says about 1–2 days, Columbus plans 6–8 hours of water shutoff. Waiting for a slot takes much longer, from weeks to years, depending on your utility's schedule. Restoration of lawns and sidewalks can follow weeks later.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my water pipe is lead?

Find where the water line enters your home, usually near the meter. Lightly scratch it with a coin or key. Lead is soft, dull gray, scratches to shiny silver, and a magnet will not stick. Galvanized steel attracts a magnet. Copper scratches to a penny color. Confirm with your utility.
