I rent. What can I do about a lead pipe?

Short answer

Renters usually cannot authorize replacement on their own, but some utilities accept an adult occupant's permission (Detroit does) or a tenant's consent signature (Denver does). Tell your landlord in writing, share the utility's program link, and ask the utility whether tenants can sign.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my water pipe is lead?

Find where the water line enters your home, usually near the meter. Lightly scratch it with a coin or key. Lead is soft, dull gray, scratches to shiny silver, and a magnet will not stick. Galvanized steel attracts a magnet. Copper scratches to a penny color. Confirm with your utility.
