What does a lead service line letter from my utility mean?

Short answer

Under EPA's rules, utilities must notify homes served by lead, galvanized-requiring-replacement or unknown lines, and repeat the notice annually. A letter means your utility's records show (or can't rule out) lead in your line. It is not a water test result. Read our step-by-step guide next.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my water pipe is lead?

Find where the water line enters your home, usually near the meter. Lightly scratch it with a coin or key. Lead is soft, dull gray, scratches to shiny silver, and a magnet will not stick. Galvanized steel attracts a magnet. Copper scratches to a penny color. Confirm with your utility.
