Short answer

Under the LCRI published in the Federal Register on October 30, 2024, the compliance date is November 1, 2027, when water systems must have a baseline inventory and begin notices. Most systems must then replace lead lines within 10 years. A court challenge is pending.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my water pipe is lead?

Find where the water line enters your home, usually near the meter. Lightly scratch it with a coin or key. Lead is soft, dull gray, scratches to shiny silver, and a magnet will not stick. Galvanized steel attracts a magnet. Copper scratches to a penny color. Confirm with your utility.
